Gandhi did experiments with fasting and dieting throughout his lifetime. He had a vow of brahmacharya (control of the sense-sexual and fasting). He thought you could use your energy for work.
He accepted an opening to work in South Africa as a counsel for a Muslim business. He received racial threats and violence in South Africa. During the South African Boer War of 1899-1902 and again in 1906 during the Zulu rebellion, he nursed plague-stricken patients shunned by others in Johannesburg.
In 1906, Gandhi urged Indians to submit to imprisonment rather than accepting restrictions imposed by the legislation. He did protests with non-violence. Gandhi thought if India acts as non-violent that the British would consider non-violent behavior and leave India. Series of violence occurred against Britain, and Gandhi found failures of the actions.
He thought that he had to educate people more about Satyagraha. His purpose was to demonstrate that "the strongest physical force bends before moral force when it is used in the defense of truth."
